Definition

A testnet is a blockchain environment used to develop and test software without using the main network's real assets. Developers can exercise wallet behavior, contract interactions, transaction handling, or mining-related code in conditions that resemble a public network while accepting that the environment may be less stable. Test coins are intended for experimentation rather than investment, and they are not interchangeable with mainnet BTC or other production assets. Bitcoin has multiple testing arrangements, including named public test networks, signet environments, and local regression testing, each serving different needs. Their consensus parameters and operating assumptions can differ from mainnet. Successful testing therefore provides useful evidence but does not prove that a system is ready for every production condition. Users should verify the selected network and avoid reusing sensitive mainnet recovery material merely for convenience when experimenting with unfamiliar software or test services.
