Bitcoin DeFi bridge risk: follow the entire asset journey
Look beyond a familiar ticker. Map the bridge, custody assumptions, application, and return route.
DEFI
Understand the asset, the bridge, the application, and the exit. Clear questions for reading bitcoin DeFi claims.
A Bitcoin-related application may introduce several components between an original asset and a displayed balance. Before evaluating a benefit, identify those components and the role each plays. A familiar symbol is not a full explanation of custody, redemption, or the authority to change a system.
The two guides below take complementary approaches. The bridge guide follows an asset's route and return path. The yield guide follows the source of a quoted payment and the assumptions used to express it. Neither is a list of approved protocols or a safety certification.
Write down the asset at each step, the network involved, the relevant documentation, and who or what controls the transition. Extend the diagram into the final application and back to the intended exit. Where a step is unclear, keep it visible as a research question.
This can reveal a gap that a percentage alone would not show. Perhaps the return route depends on conditions not described in the deposit instructions. Perhaps a reward is paid in a different unit from the supplied asset. The task is to understand the arrangement before assigning confidence to its presentation.
A technical audit, a public interface, and a description of administrative powers answer different questions. Investigate the boundaries of each rather than treating any one as a general guarantee. Documentation for one implementation should not be assumed to describe every product using similar terminology.
For a quoted return, distinguish the source of payment, the asset received, the calculation period, costs, and changes in the original position. Hypothetical calculations in our articles illustrate these distinctions; they are not live rates or expected outcomes.
Reading protocol documentation and building a question list do not require connecting a wallet. Never share recovery secrets to access educational material or support. The custody checklist covers the responsibilities that remain with the user.
For the broader question of whether any financial exposure fits your circumstances, start with the investing hub. Understanding a mechanism and deciding whether to participate are separate tasks, and an unanswered question is a valid reason to pause.
