Definition
A Bitcoin Improvement Proposal is a document used to describe a proposed change, standard, or process relevant to the Bitcoin ecosystem. BIPs can cover consensus rules, wallet interoperability, address formats, application interfaces, and other technical topics. A numbered proposal provides a stable reference for discussion, but receiving a BIP number does not mean that the community endorses it or that the network has adopted it. Some proposals become widely implemented, others remain under discussion, and others are withdrawn or superseded. The document's scope and status therefore matter as much as its title. A wallet standard can be useful without changing Bitcoin consensus, whereas a consensus proposal requires compatible deployment and adoption arrangements. Reading a BIP helps distinguish what its authors actually specify from broader claims made about the technology in marketing or social media.
